How to Use Indigo Powder

The 2-Step System (For Jet Black Hair)
Best for covering 100% grey hair roots and achieving a deep, rich, natural jet black color.
Step 1: Henna First (The Base)
Apply Henna paste on clean, oil-free damp hair. Leave it for 2 hours, then rinse with plain water only. This creates the essential copper-red base coat on grey strands.
Step 2: Indigo Next (The Color Lock)
Mix fresh Indigo paste with lukewarm water and a pinch of salt. Apply immediately (within 10-15 minutes of mixing) to damp hair. Cover with a shower cap and leave for 90-120 minutes.
Step 3: Plain Water Rinse & Oxidation
Rinse thoroughly with water. **Do not use shampoo for the next 48 hours.** Over the next 2 days, the indigo will oxidize and transition the copper-red base into a rich jet black.
The 1-Step Mix (For Custom Brown/Chocolate Tones)
Perfect for custom shades ranging from medium brown to dark chocolate.
- Light Brown: 2 Parts Henna + 1 Part Indigo
- Medium Brown: 1 Part Henna + 1 Part Indigo
- Dark Chocolate: 1 Part Henna + 3 Parts Indigo
Step 1: Separate Prep
Soak Henna in warm water for 2-3 hours. Mix Indigo separately in warm water with salt right before application.
Step 2: Combine & Apply
Combine both pastes together thoroughly. Apply immediately to damp hair and leave for 2 hours.
Direct Touch-Up (For Grey Roots & Toning)
Best for dark hair root touch-ups or to tone out warm red highlights.
Step 1: Oil-Free Hair
Clarify hair with shampoo beforehand. Indigo fails on oily hair. Apply to slightly damp hair.
Step 2: Mix & Coat
Mix Indigo powder with warm water and a pinch of salt. Apply instantly. Leave on for 60-90 minutes.
Critical Golden Rules for Indigo:
- Luke-warm Water only: Never use hot or boiling water as extreme heat destroys the active dye properties of Indigo.
- Do not wait: Slain Indigo paste loses its coloring strength. Always mix fresh and apply within 15 minutes.
- Add Salt: Adding a pinch of common salt helps the Indigo release rich tones and binds stronger to hair strands.
- No Shampoo Rule: Wash hair with plain water. Avoid shampooing for 48 hours to complete color oxidation.
